WildtoChild Ramblings ...

Earlier today I was watching The Land Before Time lll: The Time of the Great Giving as our wind down before nap time. One line really stood out to me so I wanted go share it:
“If you always react with anger, that’s all your son will know. And that’s all he will be able to express to others.”
I’ve seen firsthand parents who yell, yell, yell and/or are extremely sarcastic toward their children and then make comments about their children’s attitude or constant yelling so if you are noticing this kind of behavior from your children, next time you become flustered, frustrated, impatient, annoyed, etc. by your children try to take a deep breath and focus on your reaction. Try to react in the manner you desire your children to react to things that they find unpleasant and then watch how their behavior and reactions change along with your own.

The Infamous Temper Tantrum and What To Do About Them!

As I mentioned a few weeks ago on the WILDtoCHILD Facebook community group, when your child is throwing a tantrum it isn’t because he/she is trying to be difficult and make you question your parenting skills, it’s because he/she is having a hard time balancing all the different emotions he/she are currently feeling and/or having a hard time communicating what those feelings are and/or what is needed or wanted. In order to really help your child through the tantrum, it is important to be able to take a deep breath and dig down deep to understand the WHY behind the tantrum. I know that this can be difficult when your child is screaming and crying and possibly even becoming violent - and can even be embarrassing if in public, but with a few tips and techniques I am positive that you and your child will get through these tantrums together.

 "You can't cry for 'em
Live and die for "em
You can help them find their wings, but you can't fly for 'em
'Cause if they're not free to fall, then they're not free at all
An though you just can't bare the though of letting go
You pick 'em up
You dust ‘em off
And send ‘em on down the road."
                         - Garth Brooks "Send 'Em Down the Road"

I heard this song on the radio the other day for the very first time (which is crazy because I am a HUGE Garth Brooks fan) and I haven't been able to get it out of my mind. I'm literally listening to it on repeat as I write this and I'd be lying if I said I haven't shed a tear or two listening to it because it just spoke so strongly to me. No matter what stage of childhood your child is in - an infant learning to roll over or crawl, a toddler learning to walk and discover new things, a preschooler learning about the ins and outs of making and losing friends, an adolescent going through the ups and downs of their first love and first heartbreak, a new graduate who you just sent off to their first year of college or perhaps you have grown children now - it doesn't matter because your child(ren) will always be your baby/babies.

I often overhear or talk to parents frustrated about their children's behavior say "I tell my kids 'no' over and over, but they just don't listen. I don't know what else to do!" So for all of you with the same frustration, let me clue you in a on a little secret - it's not necessarily that they don't listen, but more likely that they are left in a confused state of "but then what am I suppose to do?" That's what I'm here to talk to you about right now.
