As I mentioned a few weeks ago on the WILDtoCHILD Facebook community group, when your child is throwing a tantrum it isn’t because he/she is trying to be difficult and make you question your parenting skills, it’s because he/she is having a hard time balancing all the different emotions he/she are currently feeling and/or having a hard time communicating what those feelings are and/or what is needed or wanted. In order to really help your child through the tantrum, it is important to be able to take a deep breath and dig down deep to understand the WHY behind the tantrum. Children are super smart and catch on extremely quickly. Sometimes this is a good thing (such as when they observe someone putting on shoes and realize that shoes go on feet, not hands), and sometimes it works against us as parents (such as when you are too tired to discipline Tommy for hitting his brother and now he realizes that he can sometimes get away with naughty behavior).  The latter example is exactly why consistency in expectations and discipline is crucial to building strong foundations for your children.

Happy 3rd birthday to your little monster --- er ....I mean little angel. You have waited 365 days for this day because things have to be better after the "terrible twos", right? WRONG! You are now the proud (and exhausted) parent of a threenager! In the coming weeks you are bound to wonder why no one has warned you about this and you are bound to wonder if your little monster will ever return to his/her angel state. I am here to tell you that, yes, it WILL get better with some hard work and some consistency - but that's a topic for another day.
